چکیده

Context. Lowand intermediate-mass stars lose most of their stellar mass at the end of their lives on the asymptotic giant branch (AGB). Determining gas and dust mass-loss rates (MLRs) is important in quantifying the contribution of evolved stars to the enrichment of the interstellar medium. Aims. Attempt to, for the first time, spectrally resolve CO thermal line emission in a small sample of AGB stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud. Methods. The Atacama Large Millimeter Array was used to observe 2 OH/IR stars and 4 carbon stars in the LMC in the CO J= 2-1 line. Results. We present the first measurement of expansion velocities in extragalactic carbon stars. All four C-stars are detected and wind expansion velocities and stellar velocities are directly measured. Mass-loss rates are derived from modelling the spectral energy distribution and Spitzer/IRS spectrum with the DUSTY code. Gas-to-dust ratios are derived that make the predicted velocities agree with the observed ones. The expansion velocities and MLRs are compared to a Galactic sample of well-studied relatively low MLRs stars supplemented with “extreme” C-stars that have properties more similar to the LMC targets. Gas MLRs derived from a simple formula are significantly smaller than derived from the dust modelling, indicating an order of magnitude underestimate of the estimated CO abundance, time-variable mass loss, or that the CO intensities in LMC stars are lower than predicted by the formula derived for Galactic objects. This could be related to a stronger interstellar radiation field in the LMC. Conclusions. Although the LMC sample is small and the comparison to Galactic stars is non-trivial because of uncertainties in their distances (hence luminosities) it appears that for C stars the wind expansion velocities in the LMC are lower than in the solar neighbourhood, while the MLRs appear similar. This is in agreement with dynamical dust-driven wind models.

Luminous carbon stars in the Magellanic Clouds?

We present ground-based 3 μm spectra of obscured Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars in the Magellanic Clouds (MCs). We identify the carbon stars on the basis of the 3.1 μm absorption by HCN and C2H2 molecules. We show evidence for the existence of carbon stars up to the highest AGB luminosities (Mbol = −7 mag, for a distance modulus to the LMC of 18.7 mag). This proves that Hot Bottom Burning ...

Probing the mass loss history of carbon stars using CO line and dust continuum emission ⋆

An extensive modelling of CO line emission from the circumstellar envelopes around a number of carbon stars is performed. By combining radio observations and infrared observations obtained by ISO the circumstellar envelope characteristics are probed over a large radial range. In the radiative transfer analysis the observational data are consistently reproduced assuming a spherically symmetric a...

Detection of carbon monoxide within the Magellanic Bridge

The Mopra 22-m and SEST 15-m telescopes have been used to detect and partially map a region of 12CO(1-0) line emission within the Magellanic Bridge, a region lying between the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds (LMC and SMC, respectively). The emission appears to be embedded in a cloud of neutral hydrogen, and is in the vicinity of an IRAS source. The CO emission region is found to have a 60 μm/...

AGB stars in the Magellanic Clouds . I . The C / M ratio .

Regions of different metallicity have been identified in the Magellanic Clouds by using the ratio between Asymptotic Giant Branch stars of spectral type C and M. In the Large Magellanic Cloud the ratio appears to decrease radially while in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) there is no clear trend, reflecting either the large extension of the SMC along the line of sight or a more complex star for...

Pristine Cno Abundances from Magellanic Cloud B Stars. Ii. Fast Rotators in the Large Magellanic Cloud Cluster Ngc 2004

We present spectroscopic abundance analyses of three main-sequence B stars in the young Large Magellanic Cloud cluster NGC 2004. All three targets have projected rotational velocities around 130 km s . Techniques are presented that allow the derivation of stellar parameters and chemical abundances in spite of these high v sin i values. Together with previous analyses of stars in this cluster, w...
